Fire Prevention & Safety
Fire prevention and safety is an important responsibility of each citizen and can help to ensure a safe community. Interested individuals will be happy to know that the Pekin Fire Department offers prevention and safety programs to the general public:
The Safe Escape House
Designed for children age 3 -10, this mobile Fire Safety trailer visits schools annually contacting all Pekin school children grades K-3. In addition, the "Safe Escape House" is a part of the Marigold Festival and Derby Days celebrations as well. It is available by request to community groups. The Safe Escape house is a children's sized house designed to teach children about all aspects of Fire Safety. This includes dialing 911, kitchen safety, not to play with fire, electrical appliance safety, and most important how to "Get out Alive" from their home in case of a fire. The Safe Escape House is owned by the Local 524 IAFF and can be requested by calling (309) 477-2388.
Fire Extinguisher Training
Fire Extinguisher training is available to local companies. The class is basic and takes employees through the steps to extinguish a fire as well as the different types of extinguishers. For information contact the Fire Department Office at 477-2391.
Fire Safety in the Workplace
This programs teaches employees the proper methods of exiting buildings and work sites, fire prevention, and employee responsibility.
General Home Fire Safety for Adults
This program teaches general home fire safety. It describes hazards around the home and how fires can be prevented. This program also includes the basics of fire extinguishers and their uses. This class is designed for open frank decisions about fire and health safety with a question/answer session.
CPS Certified
The Pekin Fire Department recently became certified in the proper installation and inspection of child safety seats and completed the four-day training course developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to become certified safety seat technicians. The training was conducted by the Illinois Department of Transportation certified technicians and Safe Kids Peoria Area along with instructors from the Children's Hospital of Illinois. Residents with car seat questions or those needing car seats installed can phone the Pekin Fire Department at (309) 477-2388.
