Councilmember John Abel joined the Pekin Fire Department in February of 1977.  For over 20 years Abel worked part-time in the private ambulance business until 1994.  In 1994 he started working for Preston Hanley Funeral Home and Crematory as a funeral assistant and is still working there today.  Abel retired from the City of Pekin Fire Department in 2007 and ran for City Council and won!  Abel is in his fourth term as a City Council Member.

Abel and his wife Judy reside in Pekin.
